Scientific removal of bark to save Machilus macrantha - a dwindling forest resource

Machilus macrantha bark is used as a binder (Jigat) in agarbathi. Indiscriminate collection of bark is leading to destruction and depletion of this valuable tree. Scientifically debarking experiments were carried out on sixty one Machilus macrantha. in Kodagu and Hassan districts of Karnataka with co-operation of Karnataka Forest Department. Leaving one or two strips of bark intact along the trunk of the tree and spraying the trees with insecticide/ fungicide mixture soon after debarking helped in its survival (Fig.) This method was found to be very satisfactory with least damage to living trees and good regeneration of bark (Fig). It will save this dwindling natural resource and help in conserving this valuable and endangered species. It will also help in sustained supply of this important forest based raw material.

Similarly, a scientific method to sustainable harvest the bark of Cinnamomum iners trees was developed in the Institute. The concerned forest departments may seek the technical details.
